QLD:Possum, joey survive round with chainsaw

BRISBANE, Aug 5 AAP - A possum and her joey who survived a round with a chainsaw are
expected to make a full recovery to the astonishment of vets.

It was a terrible case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for the hapless
pair, dubbed Chainsaw and Two-Stroke by carers at the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.

The possum was asleep with her joey in her pouch, when workers began chopping down
a tree at Thornlands, southeast of Brisbane, on Tuesday.

But she was so well camouflaged they didn't see her and the chainsaw slashed her across
the chest, leaving a horrible wound.

Panicked workers rushed the critter to the wildlife hospital on the Gold Coast, where
staff soon discovered the joey tucked safety away in the pouch.

Senior vet Dr Michael Pyne said mum and bub were doing well, and Chainsaw had been
extremely lucky.

"She basically had a 20cm wound that extended from up near her spine to down the front
of her chest and that wound was about 8cm wide as well," Dr Pyne told AAP on Friday.

"She's just very fortunate it didn't actually get into her chest cavity at all. So
really it's just nasty external wounds and a heap of stitches."

As staff carefully stitched up Chainsaw, they found the joey.

"He's very lucky. If the wound was another 10cm further south towards (the mother's)
back, little joey would have been really chewed up," Dr Pyne said.

The possums will stay under observation for two weeks before they are released back
into the wild.

"Mum's eating well and producing plenty of milk, still a little stressed but that's
not surprising," Dr Pyne said.

"But the main thing is they're not stressed so much that they're not eating."

Linnaean classification

Linnaean classification Carolus Linnaeus (1707–1778), the most famous of all naturalists, was born Carl von Linné, but subsequently adopted the Latin form of his Swedish name. The son of a clergyman, Linnaeus became an avid botanist at a very early age; his nickname was “the little botanist.” He studied at Lund and Uppsala, eventually becoming a professor of botany at Uppsala in 1741. He took time out to become a physician and a professor of medicine. But he returned to his first love and wrote many books on the subject: Systema nature (1735), Fundaments botanica (1736), Genera plantarum (1737), Flora lapponica (1737), Philosophia botanica (1751), Species plantarum (1753), and others. His books marked the beginning of taxonomy, a system of scientific nomenclature of plants and animals. His Species plantarum set the stage for a system he devised, the Linnaean system, which divided the kingdom of animals, vegetables, and minerals into classes, orders, genera, species, and varieties. He was the first to label man homo sapiens, “wise or sapient.”

FED: Vic motorcyclist's death takes national road toll to seven

By Jeff Turnbull

MELBOURNE, April 3 AAP - The death of another motorcyclist has pushed Victoria's Easter
holiday road toll to three - and the national toll to seven - despite the biggest police
road blitz in the state's history.

More than 4000 police throughout Victoria are patrolling the roads and over 5000 motorists
have been fined.

But it hasn't stopped Victoria from leading the nation's road toll.

The latest death came just after 11am (AEDT) on Saturday when a 22-year-old man died
200 metres from his home after his motorcycle hit a tree and a parked car at Wantirna
in Melbourne's east.

That followed a double fatality where two riders collided in a head-on crash near Shepparton
on Friday.

Eighteen motorcyclists have been killed in Victoria in 2010 compared to eight for the
same time last year.

A frustrated Inspector Greg Parr says it has been a disappointing start to the Easter break.

"We've got three dead in the space of a couple of days - three motorcyclists, which
is even more distressing - I'm not sure what the way forward is for the the rest of Easter,"

Insp Parr said.

"They are killing themselves way out of their proportion.

"There is no justification or excuse for it."

On Friday in the ACT, a 46-year-old motorcyclist died after his bike left Uriarra Road,
north of Cotter Dam, and went down an embankment.

The rest of the country had not recorded any Easter Saturday fatalities and the nation's
toll stands at seven, with one death in NSW, one in South Australia and one in Western
Australia adding to the total.

(EDS: AAP's Easter road toll figures are for the period 0001 April 1 to 2359 April
5. Some states and territories may have different periods.)

Vic: Crowds cheer for homeless world cup

By Jamie Duncan

MELBOURNE, Dec 7 AAP - Three winters ago, thousands of hardy souls braved the cold
in the glow of the big screen at Melbourne's Federation Square to watch the 2006 World
Cup of soccer unfold.

On Sunday, bathed in brilliant sunshine, they returned for the finals of a soccer tournament
with a lower profile but that, in its own way, is probably more important - the Homeless
World Cup.

Almost 500 homeless men and women from 56 nations came to Melbourne with hope of victory
and a good chance of changing their lives for the better.

Organisers of the tournament - the sixth for homeless men and the first for women -
say 77 per cent of homeless people who take part experience a "significant life change".

It may be they give up drugs or alcohol, find a home, get a job, go on to further training
and education, repair fractured relationships or take up positions as coaches or players
in semi-professional soccer teams.

The matches are fast-paced, high-scoring and short, played on a smaller pitch and with
only seven-minute halves.

More than 5,000 people packed the square, filling two banks of temporary stands and
climbing for vantage points on steps, tables and retaining walls for a glimpse of the
action.

It was a curious and cosmopolitan mix of sports fanatics and the socially conscious.

Karen Cohen brought her daughters Vanessa Mae and Dara to watch.

"I love the whole idea of giving people some sense of pride and it makes me happy that
it wasn't about money. It was about the experience. I wanted to teach my two daughters
those values," she said.

The sports nuts came well prepared with a range of national strips and flags and soccer
chants that were just as varied and colourful.

During the women's final, between Zambia and Liberia, a group of African men - one
with a set of bongo drums - sang and chanted.

Zambia won the inaugural women's final 7-1, with Liberia hit hard by injury.

Robert Tracey, now living in Melbourne, belied his Scottish origins with a thick accent,
the Scottish national strip and his face painted in blue and white.

"I support Scotland all the way. The Scots didn't make the final but there's always
next year," he said.

Isheq Adadh, who emigrated from Afghanistan 10 years ago, cheered with his two sons
and their three friends as the Afghani team played.

"It's the first time we have seen Afghan sportsmen," he said.

"They are playing very well."

Afghanistan's team, the clear crowd favourite, overcame decades of war and poverty
to win their close and hard-fought final against Russia, 5-4.

FED: Teachers should be paid more than $100,000 per year: report

By Julian Drape

CANBERRA, Aug 4 AAP - Teachers should be paid according to their performance and the
best should receive more than $100,000 a year, a new report suggests.

The Australian Education Union (AEU) commissioned study adds weight to the push for
higher salaries, started earlier this year by the Business Council of Australia (BCA).

It also follows comments last month by federal Education Minister Julia Gillard that
top teachers should be better "rewarded".

The latest study, conducted by the University of NSW, suggests a set of national standards
to assess teachers who want to be classified.

Those that met the mark would become "accomplished teachers" and paid at least $100,000 a year.

"To tackle the teacher shortage and attract and retain quality teachers we need to
offer rewarding salary and career structures," AEU federal president Angelo Gavrielatos
said in a statement.

"Establishing a national assessment and classification structure for accomplished teachers
is possible based on standards and criteria already being used in various ways across
the states."

Mr Gavrielatos called on the Rudd government to respond "with a clear funding commitment".

"Currently, there are few options for such teachers other than to move into leadership
and administrative roles which take them and their teaching abilities out of the classroom
where they are most needed," he said.

The government has welcomed the AEU research report, saying it recognised the need
for change and is working with states and territories to facilitate better rewards for
teachers.

"This proposal from the profession is timely as COAG (the Council of Australian Governments)
is developing its National Partnership on teacher quality," Ms Gillard said in a statement.

Governments needed to find ways of valuing excellent teachers "to keep the best teachers
in front of classrooms".

In May, the BCA said top teachers should earn up to $130,000 per year.

Currently, the highest rate for public classroom teachers is around $70,000.

The council said it would cost $4 billion to introduce a national certification performance
pay system.

Last month, Ms Gillard suggested Australia should follow the lead of the United Kingdom
and the United States, where governments have joined forces with business and charities
to attract the best and brightest graduates into teaching.

Fed: Tax cuts to remain as promised: Rudd

CANBERRA, Feb 10 AAP - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says tax cuts due to be delivered
the upcoming budget will be delivered in the form promised.

During the 2007 federal election campaign, Labor vowed to match the coalition's promised
$31 billion tax cuts.

But there has been concern the tax cuts will exacerbate the rising inflation problems.

Mr Rudd said the new Labor government would proceed with the tax cuts despite the concerns.

"I take seriously what you say to people - it's not all that magical - you say you're
going to do something you should do it," Mr Rudd told the Nine Network today.

One suggested option is to pay tax cuts into superannuation instead of direct savings.

But Mr Rudd is not willing to change Labor's plans.

"We will work through a whole range of options and possibilities but there will be
absolutely no change to people having tax cuts to take as additional income at the point
of which they are implemented," he said.

NSW:Tell all Corby source can't be trusted, Mercedes Corby says

SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - A former member of Schapelle Corby's legal team who is threatening
to tell "the truth" about her drug smuggling conviction can't be trusted, Corby's sister
Mercedes says.

Vasu Rasiah is angry about an attack on his reputation in Corby's book, My Story, in
which he is described as a money-hungry bully.

Mr Rasiah says he is willing to reveal damaging details about Corby's defence, and
her plea of innocence, unless she backs off.

"If they push us to a corner then we have no option but to reveal all the truth, and
everything that took place, we will. And that will be very detrimental to her," Mr Rasiah
told ABC television last night.

Mercedes Corby, speaking from her Gold Coast home early today, said Mr Rasiah is not
a lawyer and he has threatened the family before.

She said his claims are untrue.

"He can't be trusted ... he is obviously lashing out because he does not like what
is in the book," Mercedes told AAP.

"He can't handle the truth. Schapelle is innocent."

Mr Rasiah was a member of Corby's Indonesian legal team after her arrest in Bali in
2004 with 4.1 kg of cannabis inside a bodyboard bag.

Corby, 29, is serving a 20 year sentence in Bali's Kerobokan Prison.

Mr Rasiah said Mercedes was instrumental in the family refusing an offer from the Australian
Federal Police to DNA test the cannabis, to track its origin, when they learned the results
would be passed on to Indonesian police.

Mr Rasiah told the ABC: "We even got a couple of samples from Bali police for this testing".

But Mercedes rejected that, saying Schapelle signed her consent for the tests but the
Indonesian police refused to release samples.

And she said claims in the ABC report that Schapelle stopped to meet an Adelaide man
on her way to Brisbane airport were "just crap".

"There was mum driving, Schapelle, James, Ally and Katrina in the car, they did not
stop," Mercedes said.

Quoting sources close to the family, the ABC reported it had new information about
Corby's movements before she entered Brisbane airport on October 8, 2004, the day she
left Australia for Bali.

She met an Adelaide man, in the pre-dawn darkness, on her way to Brisbane's international
airport that day, causing her to almost miss her 6am flight, the report said.

World Cup organizers want to play some matches under roofs to reduce the amount of shadow in TV broadcasts _ as long as it does not get too steamy for players.

"If you have watched the matches (Saturday) on television, you saw that for the matches in the afternoon _ when the sun is shining _ it's not the best TV picture," FIFA spokesman Markus Siegler said Sunday.

Web-like steel rods over Frankfurt's stadium cast shadows over the field during England's 1-0 win over Paraguay on Saturday.

Frankfurt and Gelsenkirchen are two of the 12 venues with retractable roofs, and FIFA is considering playing the afternoon matches at those venues with the tops closed.

"We're currently assessing the situation," he said. "We must understand, millions and millions of people are watching the match and there's not a nice picture with all those shadows."

But with temperatures rising across Germany _ and the England players already complaining about the heat _ player comfort is a big issue.

"The priority, of course, are the players. We have to check the situation, what it means with regards to the heat," said Siegler, adding that the first World Cup matches played under a roof were "like a sauna."

"It should not be as it was in 1994 at the Silverdome, when you played around noon and it was like 50 degrees (122 degrees Fahrenheit) or more in Detroit.

"At the same time, we have a responsibility to the billions of fans around the world watching on television, and they are not seeing good pictures with the shadow markings on the pitch."

Despite limits on tickets issued to each national association, England fans dominated the crowd at the 43,324-seat stadium in Frankfurt, raising local concerns about the number of tickets being sold on the black market.

Despite strict rules that require personal information in exchange for tickets in a bid to weed out potential hooligans, Germany 2006 spokesman Gerd Graus said the ticket system "ultimately it's ... like roulette."

He said the England fans either got in early when the tickets went on sale on the Internet or were lucky.

"According to our information, all tickets were sold in a proper manner," he said.

Graus said random checks for identification at stadium gates had not uncovered any illegal tickets.

The only security breach so far, he said, was when two fans got into the players' area at the England-Paraguay match.

"They did get in, but were immediately taken to the side," he said. "No problem at all. We had it under control."

UC SAN DIEGO'S BILL PING PIU KUO NAMED 2011 YOUNG SCHOLAR BY THE MARCONI SOCIETY.

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The following information was released by the University of California - San Diego:

By Catherine Hockmuth

Bill Ping Piu Kuo, a photonics student who is about to receive his doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of California, San Diego, is one of three students worldwide to be honored by the prestigious Marconi Society. He was selected a Marconi Young Scholar in part because of key work developing wideband optical parametric mixers and ultrafast transmission schemes to send and receive signals of unprecedented speed and quality - and with record low power consumption.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Stojan Radic likens optic fiber to a large fire hose gushing with the fluids of information - so much that today's electronics simply aren't fast enough to consume it all. "So what Bill has done is take this fire hose and split it into little straws, and these straws can be sipped by conventional electronics," said Radic. Such breakthroughs, by allowing quicker and more efficient transmissions, could prevent systems used to stream high-quality video from collapsing under increasing demand.

As the leading organization devoted to recognizing and encouraging scientific contributions to communication sciences and the Internet, the Marconi Society annually honors young scholars who already are engaged in influential work and are likely to transform their fields in some significant way. This marks the fourth year that Young Scholars Awards have been granted by the Marconi Society, which is best known for its annual $100,000 Marconi Award and Fellowship given to scientists whose scope of work and influence emulate the principle of "creativity in service to humanity."

As Marconi Society Chairman Emeritus Robert Lucky noted, the scholars selection committee "looks for candidates who show the potential to win the Marconi Prize - the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in communications science - at some point in the future. As a point of reference, Marconi Fellows have been at the forefront of every modern advance in telecommunications and the Internet."

Earlier this year, Irwin Mark Jacobs and Jack Keil Wolf - two engineers whose groundbreaking research and designs in digital communications helped propel the information revolution - won the 2011 Marconi Society Fellowship and Prize. Both men were longtime professors at UC San Diego.

All three of this year's Marconi Society Paul Baran Young Scholar Award recipients are completing their doctorates while making vital contributions to the world's "need for speed" - our increasing imperative to be able to send and receive data as quickly and economically as possible.

Though intricate and often theoretical, their research is aimed at making communications faster and more efficient, giving people everyday benefits -- from better video-on-demand service to improved MRI scans that yield medical images in a quicker and thus more comfortable way.

Kuo's optical signal processing research is prompted by the problem of ever-increasing stress on the capacity of transmission systems. His work on ultrafast signal processing has opened a pathway to realize a photonics-aided, analog-to-digital converter system with unprecedented bandwidth and fidelity. "I would like to try to commercialize the technology," said Kuo, who plans to do so in conjunction with UC San Diego.

Having been first in his class while earning a bachelor's degree in electronic and communications engineering and then a master's in electronic engineering from the University of Hong Kong, he became an immediate standout at UC San Diego.

Radic said Kuo has contributed to more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, including prestigious post-deadline and invited papers at events such as the Optical Fiber Communications Conference. Radic is also director of the Photonics System Group at UC San Diego. "It is safe to say that he does not have a peer in this field at his present age," said Radic, who described Kuo as "unconditionally regarded as the best researcher of his group or the department to date." Radic said Kuo's leadership and vision on parametric signal processing "has resulted in completely new signal processing architectures and newfound ability to manipulate fast signals."

The Marconi Young Scholar Awards are named in honor of Paul Baran, a Marconi Fellow famous for helping devise the technical inner-workings of the Arpanet, the government-sponsored precursor to the Internet. Nonetheless, Baran always declined to be called the inventor of the Internet, instead likening it to a vast cathedral built by countless people continually adding their own stones to reshape its image.

The Young Scholar Awards include a financial stipend and an invitation and travel funds to attend the annual Marconi Award Dinner, to be held in September in San Diego.

Calls for sect jihad.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

Thousands of hardline Muslims shouted for jihad or holy war during a demonstration in the Indonesian capital yesterday unless the government bans a minority sect and releases a detained radical cleric. The protesters cried "Allahu Akbar!" (God is greater) and carried banners calling members of the Ahmadiyah Islamic sect "infidels" to be "exterminated" because they do not believe Mohammed is the final prophet.

"If the president doesn't dissolve Ahmadiyah then there is no other way but jihad," co-organiser Abdurrahman, from one of the main Islamist groups in the country, told the crowd outside police headquarters. The crowd responded with a chant of "Jihad! Jihad! Jihad!" Around 5,000 protesters wearing white skullcaps and Islamic headscarves earlier blocked the street in front of the presidential palace in a show of force following a police crackdown on an Islamist extremist group last week.

Later they marched and rode motorcycles five kilometresA to the police headquarters to demand the release of eight radicals detained over a violent attack on a rally for religious tolerance earlier this month. "We are giving the government an ultimatum until Thursday. If they haven't issued the decree (banning Ahmadiyah) by then, after Friday prayers millions of Muslims will take to the streets," an unidentified speaker told the rally.

The furore over the sect has tarnished Indonesia's image as a moderate, mainly Islamic country and stoked unrest amid anger over soaring inflation and fuel prices. "The government should quickly ban Ahmadiyah, they are sinners. Should we allow these infidels to continue to insult Islam?" said teenager Subhan as he marched toward the police station.

Many paraded under pictures of Rizieq Shihab, the detained leader of the Defenders FrontA which has declared "war" on Ahmadiyah. and organised the June 1 attack by stick-wielding fanatics on the pro-tolerance rally.

5-year-old shoots, injures 4-year-old

A 5-year-old boy shot and injured a 4-year-old boy on a playground outside a Temple Hills apartment complex Thursday afternoon, Prince George's County police said.

Officers were called to the 4400 block of 23rd Parkway at about 4 p.m. for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a boy who had been shot once, county police spokesman Cpl. Mike Rodriguez said. After firing, the 5-year-old shooter apparently ran away and hid the gun, which police recovered shortly after they arrived on the scene.

The 4-year-old boy was transported to Children's Hospital in the District and his injuries appear not to be life threatening, Cpl. Rodriguez said.

Officers have interviewed the parents of both children and are trying to learn how the child got hold of the gun and who the gun belongs to.

Charges are pending until we find out, Cpl. Rodriguez said.

Officers are also trying to determine who was supposed to be watching the children when the shooting occurred.

Lottery to seek input on 'hot spots'

The D.C. Lottery has assured a key D.C. Council member that it will not roll out online gambling in public locations until communities have their say on where the contentious program may operate.

Jack Evans, Ward 2 Democrat, said he met with lottery officials and the Office of the Chief Financial Officer to let them know that Advisory Neighborhood Commissions and other members of the public need to know more about the program, known as I-Gaming.

The District would be the first jurisdiction to offer gambling on the Internet, a move sanctioned by federal law as long as it stays within the city's borders. Six demonstration games are scheduled for release this summer before betting can begin in early September.

Players must be 19 years old, register on a single account and play from pre-approved IP addresses on their home computers or on their laptops within public areas with a signal that allows players to log on.

These public areas, known as hot spots, are of concern to Mr. Evans, who held a hearing on I-Gaming on Wednesday as chairman of the Committee on Finance and Revenue.

Based on testimony he heard, Mr. Evans said the rules for choosing hot spots are unclear and should be clarified for the public.

Specifically, the D.C. Lottery will meet with ward council members to organize community meetings to ensure residents have ample time to consider I-Gaming locations prior to any decisions being made, Mr. Evans said.

New fees for DMV customers

New fees are scheduled to take effect at the District's Department of Motor Vehicles on Friday.

The fees, part of a plan to close the District's budget gap, will include increases to the charge to obtain a duplicate identification card, from $7 to $20 and an increase in the charge to get a duplicate commercial driver's license, from $13 to $20.

The DMV also will begin charging a $10 fee for taking both the road test and the knowledge test that are required to get a city driver's license.

About SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM

WWW.SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM is a service designed to help bonafide shareholders of publicly traded US companies fight short selling. SqueezeTrigger.com has built a proprietary database that uses Threshold list feeds and short sale time and sale data from NASDAQ, AMEX and NYSE to generate detailed and useful information to combat the short selling problem. For the first time, actual trade by trade data is available to the public that shows the attempted size, actual size, price and average value of short sales in stocks that have been shorted. This information is valuable in determining the precise point at which short sellers go out-of-the-money and start losing on their short trades.

SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM has built a massive database that collects, analyzes and publishes a proprietary SqueezeTrigger for each stock that has been shorted. The SqueezeTrigger database of nearly 2.5 billion short sale transactions goes back to January 1, 2005 and calculates the exact price at which the Total Short Interest is short in each stock. This data was never before available prior to January 1, 2005 because the Self Regulatory Organizations (primary exchanges) guarded it aggressively. After the SEC passed Regulation SHO, exchanges were forced to allow data processors like SqueezeTrigger.com to access the data.

The SqueezeTrigger database collects individual short trade data on over 7,000 NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ stocks and general short trade data on nearly 8,000 OTCBB and PINKSHEET stocks. Each month the database grows by approximately 50,000,000 short sale transactions and provides investors with the knowledge necessary to time when to buy and sell stocks with outstanding short positions. By tracking the size and price of each montha'a"s short transactions, SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM provides institutions, traders, analysts, journalists and individual investors the exact price point where short sellers start losing money and a short squeeze can begin.

FCF Expected To Be Down After Next Earnings Releases.

M2 PRESSWIRE-April 20, 2011-BUYINS.NET: FCF Expected To Be Down After Next Earnings Releases(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

RDATE:19042011

BUYINS.NET / www.squeezetrigger.com is monitoring the performance of all stocks with earnings being released Wednesday, April 20th 2011 and determining how the stocks have performed After their last 12 quarterly, 6 quarterly and 12 Consecutive Days earnings reports. FIRST COMMONWEALTH FINL CORP (NYSE:FCF) are all expected to be Down After their earnings are released Wednesday. The movement of stock prices in the days and weeks leading to and following these earnings announcements may follow a predictable pattern. Most companies stock price histories show random or unpredictable movements around earnings dates. But some seem to repeat the same pattern quarter after quarter, year after year. The # of Reports in the table below shows how many previous quarterly reports comprise the indicator that predicts how a stock will act after its earnings are released. The specific technology used to make these predictions is available for a low monthly fee at http://www.squeezetrigger.com/services/strat/mh.php . The following stocks are expected to go Down After earnings are released Wednesday:

Symbol Company # of Reports Quarter Release Time

FCF FIRST COMMONWEALTH FINL CORP 12 Quarter Q1 Before

This technology is designed to help the stock trader identify those companies that seem to have a consistent pattern of movement before or after the earnings release date, based on the history of earnings releases for that company. It combines a calendar of expected earnings releases with a history of past earnings releases in a way that lets you see if a pattern exists.
