Fed: Study of Gulf War veterans health underway

CANBERRA, Aug 2 AAP - A $4 million project to study the health of Australian veterans
from the Gulf War started today.

Veterans' Affairs Minister Bruce Scott is encouraging veterans from the 1990-1991 conflict
to participate in the study which started in Melbourne.

He said it was important to gain an understanding of the health and well-being over
the long term of those men and women who served in the Gulf.

"The lessons we learn from this study will not only help Gulf War veterans but also
servicemen and women on future deployments," Mr Scott said in a statement.

The study is being carried out by Monash University's epidemiology department and Preventative
Medicine and Health Services Australia.

The study will focus on those who served in the Gulf from August 1990 to September 1991.

Participants will undergo thorough medical and psychological examinations and be asked
to provide details of their medical history and experiences.

Those Gulf veterans wishing to take part should contact the Veterans' Affairs Department
on 1800 502 302.
