VIC: One incident led to unlicenced gun crackdown: police

Police say a firearms audit has found that at least 75,000 illegal guns could still be in
circulation in Victoria.

They say a single incident in northern Melbourne sparked the records check and uncovered
about 5,000 unlicensed firearms in the district.

A spokesman says that on a state-wide basis this could equate to at least 75,000 guns owned
by almost 50,000 people -- listed on the firearms register as having expired licences.
