NSW: Total fireban for NSW northern tablelands

SYDNEY, Aug 31 AAP - A total fire ban has been declared in NSW's northern tablelands, rural fire authorities said tonight.

The Rural Fire Service (RFS) said the weather forecast for the area, around Glen Innesand Armidale in the state's north, was for very high temperatures, low humidity and moderateto strong winds.

These conditions were conducive to fire activity and the community was urged to takecare, an RFS spokesman said.

He said fire danger in this area would be extreme or approaching extreme.

During a total fire ban, no fire of any kind may be lit in the open.

This includes incinerators and barbecues which burn solid fuel such as wood or charcoal.

Gas or electric barbecues can be used, but only if they are on residential propertieswithin 20 metres of the home and under the direct control of a responsible adult.

The ground around it must also be cleared for three metres of all material which couldburn and a continuous supply of running water must be nearby.

The total fire ban comes on the back of the RFS declaring an early start to the bushfiredanger period for most of the state's east.

Emergency Services Minister Bob Debus announced yesterday that the statutory bushfiredanger period would commence tomorrow, forcing those wishing to light fires in easternNSW to obtain a permit to do so.
